My new rating system for flash movies!

Posted by walrusgod Jun. 2, 2008 @ 4:20 PM EDT

Everyone rates things differently, and everyone has a different opinion of what a certain score means (for some, a 5 is bad, for others, it shows the promise that the flash has). So, I've decided to code my scores, and to hopefully dole them out as noted. The scores should be read as follows:

10 - The Walrus Seal of Excellence
9 - Highly recommended
8 - Recommended
7 - Check it out if you have time
6 - Check it out if you like the genre
5 - Worth a look
4 - Shows promise, but falls short
3 - Not very good
2 - Very Bad
1 - Horrible
0 - Atrocious

In general, anything with an 8 or above is great, and definitely has a chance to be added to my favorites list. Things rated 5-7 have flaws, but are generally at least moderately enjoyable to varying degrees. Those rated 3 or 4 show some potential to be good, but as is are either broken/unenjoyable. Those with a 2 or less are generally extremely bad and I can see no way to make it good without completely remaking the Flash.

Duped, and I Don't Like It

Posted by walrusgod Feb. 8, 2008 @ 1:42 AM EST

Edit: Well, it appears the "Shoooooeeeee" video has been deleted from the site, so now this post is just the memory of my anger. However, that does not make the anger any less palpable, however I did find the flash video ("Commencement") elsewhere on the internet (on ~aniki91344's deviant art page), and I definitely recommend it for viewing.

Recently, I wrote a review for a flash entitled "Commencement." It was an interesting flash, seeming to be a rough interpretation of Plato's "Allegory of the Cave" (of which my philosophy professor is extremely fond, or at least really likes to tell his classes). It wasn't the most well animated piece, and was fairly short, but it was by no means one of the horrible little stickman movies that seem to saturate many of the new entries to the site, and the music in the piece did a very good job of capturing the mood.

Now, however, the video has been replaced (either by the author or by someone who found a way to swap out someone else's video) with a distorted picture of Ronald McDonald with someone yelling "Shoeeeeee" over and over. It's one of those "obvious blam" videos, in which no reasonable person could not blam them. In fact, I had blammed this piece earlier in the evening, which makes this even more frustrating.

Now, I have a review in which I express actual and personal praise attached to a flash that is unimaginative, lazy, and just plain annoying. I know this sounds like I'm taking this overly personally, but I don't like having my words taken from me and misattributed. One of the things I like about this site is finding that good flash buried in a sea of stick figures, hentai, "madness" characters, poorly made anime rip-offs, and bigotry. I had found one of those flashes that I felt good enough to write a favorable review about, and then the words are put next to utter trash.

Granted, as I write this I find my anger at the situation somewhat laughable. I'm getting angry over my comments on a flash movie, a piece of entertainment. Plus, as I vent my displeasure, the displeasure itself slowly subsides, so that I'm not quite as upset.

However, I'm sure another viewing of "Shooooeeeee" will easily be able to temporarily revive my angst for a short while.
